A 33-year-old man was shot to death Sunday in the Westlake community of Los Angeles and a man between 35 and 40 years old was arrested in connection with the homicide, police said Sunday.
The attack took place about 5:20 p.m. on Wilshire Boulevard, between Westlake and Alvarado streets, Officer Rosario Cervantes of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section said.
The victim, identified by the coroner’s office as Michael Smiley, was pronounced dead at the scene.
LAPD officers patrolling the area around MacArthur Park heard a gunshot and saw a man put a gun in his backpack, Fox 11 reported.
When the patrol car turned on Wilshire Boulevard from Alvarado Street, the man took off running and the officers got out of their patrol car and ran after him, authorities said.
The man threw away the backpack with the gun inside it and then got down on the ground and surrendered to the officers, according to Fox 11.
Police were investigating the suspect and the Smiley to see what transpired before the shooting, LAPD Lt. Ryan Rabbett told the station.
The name of the suspect has not yet been released by police.
