L.A. County Deputy Ordered to Stand Trial in Alleged Attack on Mother

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who allegedly attacked his 73-year-old mother at the family’s home in East Los Angeles and resisted arrest was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on a trio of felonies.

Antonio Ramirez, 45, pleaded not guilty July 31 to one count each of elder abuse, resisting an executive officer and carrying a dirk or dagger, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

A judge found sufficient evidence during a preliminary hearing that wrapped up Wednesday for the case to proceed to trial.

Prosecutors said Ramirez was off duty on July 29 when he allegedly attacked his mother, who fell to the ground and suffered “visible injuries.” He was allegedly carrying a dagger when another deputy responded to the scene, and Ramirez “forcibly” resisted arrest, prosecutors said.

Ramirez has remained jailed since his arrest in lieu of $75,000 bail, according to sheriff’s online records.

Ramirez faces up to five years and four months in prison if convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
