City Attorney, Prosecutors Send Letter Urging Gun Reforms To Mitch McConnell

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer Friday joined 43 prosecutors from around the nation in authoring a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to reconvene the senate and pass gun-control legislation.
“Gun violence in America is a national emergency. Every day the senate puts off this debate is a day when someone in America will needlessly lose their life to firearms. That’s why prosecutors, charged with protecting public safety, urge the Senate to take action now,” Feuer said in a joint news release with New York City’s Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr.
The letter was co-authored by Prosecutors Against Gun Violence and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys.
“As prosecutors from across the nation, we respectfully implore you, in the strongest possible terms, to immediately reconvene the senate in a session dedicated to preventing gun violence in America,” the letter to McConnell stated. “Gun violence is ripping apart families and neighborhoods on a daily basis. As we mourn the devastation of mass shootings across the country — most recently in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton — we turn to you because you can change this grotesquely unacceptable new American normal.”
McConnell recently indicated the senate would consider some gun violence prevention measures in September, but the letter authors want that action to be taken sooner.
CBS News reported Thursday that McConnell spoke with President Donald Trump recently about various proposals that will be “front and center” in senate discussions, including so-called red flag warning legislation that would keep guns from people deemed a threat by their friends and family members, as well as expanding background checks.
“There’s a lot of support for that,” McConnell said, referring to legislation that would extend background checks for nearly all gun sales. A similar effort died in the senate in 2013. “The urgency of this is not lost on any of us.”
