Southern California’s third summer heat wave begins

by Steven Rosenberg

LOS ANGELES — The Southland’s third heat wave of the summer descended on the region Friday, sending San Fernando Valley temperatures back into three-digit territory.

The heat wave results from high pressure aloft spreading into Southern California, combined with a weakening in the onshore flow, said National Weather Service meteorologist Curt Kaplan. Temperatures will begin declining Monday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a heat alert for the western San Fernando Valley that will be in effect Saturday and Sunday, urging people to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Health officials urged residents to drink lots of non-alcoholic, caffeine-free beverages, take advantage of air-conditioned cooling centers and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. They also encouraged people to check regularly on elderly or home-bound relatives and friends.

The NWS forecast sunny skies in L.A. County Friday with highs of 77 in Avalon; 79 in San Pedro; 80 at LAX; 81 in Torrance; 87 in Long Beach; 88 in downtown LA; 89 on Mount Wilson; 92 in San Gabriel; 93 in North Hollywood and Whittier; 94 in West Covina; 95 in Studio City, Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks, Pasadena and Burbank; 97 in Northridge and Chatsworth; 99 in Granada Hills; 100 in Canoga Park, Winnetka and Santa Clarita; 101 in Woodland Hills; and 102 in Palmdale and Lancaster.

Sunny skies were also forecast in Orange County, along with highs of 78 in San Clemente, Laguna Beach and Newport Beach; 83 on Santiago Peak; 87 on Ortega Highway at 2,600 feet; 88 in Santa Ana; 91 in Irvine; 92 in Fullerton and Mission Viejo; 93 in Anaheim, Yorba Linda and Trabuco Canyon; and 94 in Fremont Canyon. Orange County temperatures will remain roughly at the same level until they begin declining Tuesday.
