Woman Shot Dead in East Hollywood

A woman was fatally shot Thursday in East Hollywood by a man who had been following her as she walked near an apartment complex, authorities said.

Gunfire was reported about 2:20 p.m. in the 900 block of North Oxford Avenue, south of Romaine Street, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im said.

An ambulance was called to the scene for a woman who was down in the driveway of an apartment complex, not conscious or breathing, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Distraught family members told reporters that she was 27-year-old Cindy Lopez, who lived nearby with her mother and had been studying for a career in law.

It’s unclear if the woman and the man suspected of shooting her knew one another, but the shooting did not appear to be random, LAPD Lt. John Radtke said at the scene.

The suspect, who was wearing shorts and a blue shirt, fled the scene northbound on foot and was being sought, according to the detective.

Police had earlier said a man with a comb-over fled the scene in a light blue Toyota Rav4, last seen heading north on Oxford and east on Romaine, but Radtke said that has not been verified and investigators have received conflicting information.
