A 67-year-old motorist who allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian in Claremont was charged Monday with felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
Bail was set at $100,000 for Helen Scheuplein of Covina, who made her initial appearance at the Pomona courthouse but did not enter a plea. Her arraignment was rescheduled to Feb. 3.
Scheuplein is accused in the death of James Radzik, 50, of Rancho Cucamonga, who was struck in the 1600 block of Towne Avenue near Syracuse Drive. His body was found on the pavement about 2:30 a.m. last Wednesday, according to Lt. Jason Walters of the Claremont Police Department.
Claremont police detectives spotted the suspect vehicle around 5:55 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of East Foothill Boulevard in Pomona and arrested her without incident, Walters said.
Scheuplein was booked into the Claremont Police Department Jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, in addition to vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death, according to Walters.
