One California Highway Patrol officer was killed and two were wounded Monday during an exchange of gunfire on the south end of Riverside that also left the gunman dead.
The officer-involved shooting occurred about 5:35 p.m. in the area of Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue, just west of Interstate 215.
According to Riverside Police Department Officer Ryan Railsback, the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop initiated by a CHP officer.
The suspect opened fire with a rifle and was fatally wounded by return fire. He died at a hospital, Railsback said.
One of the wounded officers was airlifted from the scene, and the other two were transported by ambulance. The CHP later announced that one of the officers had died.
An update was not immediately available on the surviving officers’ conditions. Railsback said the officers were taken to at least two hospitals.
One civilian may have been hit by flying glass or “shrapnel” during the gunfire.
Riverside police are leading a multiple-agency investigation involving the CHP and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
