A 24-year-old Pomona man was killed, his female passenger injured and a second driver arrested in a fatal hit-and-run crash Sunday morning on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Diamond Bar.
The crash on the eastbound 60 Freeway at Grand Avenue happened just after 4:45 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
According to the CHP, the 2002 Mazda Protégé became disabled across the number 4 and 5 lanes.
A second motorist driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer, 30-year-old Juan David Montiel of Fontana, was in the number 4 lane. Montiel swerved to avoid the disabled vehicle but hit the Mazda and the man who died.
After the crash, Montiel fled the scene on foot. He was later arrested at his residence, the CHP reported. The female passenger in the Mazda, 21-year-old Roxanna Rios of Anaheim, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to an area trauma center.
Firefighters and paramedics dispatched to the location at 4:48 a.m. reported the Mazda driver dead at the scene, a county fire department dispatcher said.
The name of the deceased driver will be withheld pending family notification.
A SigAlert was issued at 5:31 a.m. closing all lanes of the eastbound freeway until 9:24 a.m. when the freeway was cleared, the CHP said.
The crash remains under investigation and drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in it, the CHP said.
Anyone with information on the crash was asked to call the CHP at 323-343-0512.
