CASTAIC — Firefighters continued their efforts Monday to fully extinguish a brush fire that scorched 156 acres and was 97 percent contained in the Angeles National Forest near the northbound 5 Freeway at Templin Highway.
The fire was reported at 12:46 p.m. Saturday by a witness who told the California Highway Patrol that a black Kia Sorrento was burning on the right shoulder.

A 200-acre brush fire burns along the 5 Freeway just west of Templin Highway and about 10 miles north of Castaic. The fire was started by a car fire that spread to the tinder brush in the Angeles National Forest. Los Angeles County firefighters were fighting the blaze in 100 degree heat aided by air tankers and helicopteers. Traffic was backed up all the way to Castaic. (Photo Courtesy of Mike Meadows)

Within a few minutes, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames pushed by northeast winds into the brush along the road. The blaze had a “moderate rate of spread,” U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy said.
One firefighter suffered minor burns and was treated at the scene, Judy said. He added that the USFS will conduct an independent investigation into how the fire started.
As part of the mopping-up effort, the No. 4 lane of the northbound 5 Freeway near Templin Highway was expected to be closed for a time early Monday afternoon so crews can remove firefighting equipment from the area, Judy said.
Officials were hoping to have the fire 100 percent contained some time Monday, Judy said.
